The weaving of Kanchipuram silk sarees started around 400 years ago in the small temple town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Back then, Kanchipuram sarees were woven by the descendants of Sage Markanda, who was considered to be the master weaver for the Gods.

The Kanchipuram sarees are woven using three shuttles. One weaver weaves at the right side of the shuttle while at the same time the other weaver weaves the saree from the left shuttle. The borders of Kanchipuram silk are mostly woven in contrasting shades. The Kanchipuram Pattu sarees are woven with beautiful motifs such as peacock, paisley, Annapakshi, Chakram, Yali, and floral motifs. Each motif has its significance and adds value to the silk.

Thus, the saree parts are woven differently and later joined together.
