Types of Fabrics
Bandhani: Bandhej, also known as Bandhani, is a tie and dye method practiced mainly in states of Rajasthan, Gujarat and parts of Uttar Pradesh. It involves dyeing a fabric tied tightly with a thread at several points, producing a variety of patterns.
Leheriya: Lehariya or Leheriya is a simple style of tie and dye from the state of Rajasthan, India. Traditionally seen in bright colors it has a very distinctive striped pattern. fabric is tied before dyeing it in dyes and then the tied are opened which exposes beautiful patterns.
Block printing: The art of hand block-printing has been practiced for centuries in India. A process that requires steady movement and careful hand-eye coordination, this traditional technique of fabric printing involves the use of carved wooden blocks that are dipped in dye to recreate gorgeous designs.Block printed fabrics usually showcase a palette of colours that bring these designs to life.
Ikat is an elaborate dying process done with silk or cotton fabrics. The end result is a piece of cloth bathed and glittered in colorful patterns.
Ikat patterns are dyed and binded into the threads before cloth is weaved. This differentiates it from the Tie and Dye process where the fabric is woven in the first place.
The term "Ikat" itself is a derivation from the Malay word mengikat which means to tie or to bind.
Ikat mainly showcases three varieties:
- Single Ikat is a process in which either the warp yarns or the weft are dyed.
- The second procedure of combined Ikkat has both warp yarns and the weft being used together in different parts of the fabric.
- Double Ikat involves both warp and weft threads tied in a greatly precise manner so that when the threads from both axis mesh with each other at certain points to show up a completed pattern.
Kantha: Kantha is a form of intricate embroidery in Bengal. It is characterised by running stitches placed close to each other. The women majorly used to embroider Kantha. In its traditional form, It is a type of quilting which reuses old fabrics to repurposed situations. Nowadays Kantha is extensively used over fabrics as a type of surface ornamentation.
Ajrakh: A block printing technique which originated in Sindh and is now found in Kutch, Gujarat. It is characterized by the deep indigo hues which are found in several different shades due to multiple rounds of dyeing the cloth. The designs are formed by a dye resist created with mud and the patterns are usually geometric and symmetrical. Other colours found are variations of yellow, green, red and black.
Batik: Batik is a process of resist dyeing where wax is applied to areas before dyeing. The wax repels the dyes creating beautiful patterns.
